The Department of Sociology offers two programs for making exams. One is script, in which plain documents can be printed from the mainframe for distribution to students. This may also be used for syllabus or other handouts. The other is Parkino, or scrambled.

Script Parkino Scantrons

Script

This can be any sort of test you prefer, i.e., multiple choice with up to five answers or true false (this is different from Parkino that allows only multiple choice questions with five answers).

At the very top of your document, include the following commands:

  • .ll 70 (sets line length at 70, but you can also use 72)
  • .in 4 (sets the page to indent four spaces)
  • .nf (sets the document to "no fill")
Always start commands at the left margin. Enter dot commands just above the line that you want the command to take hold. The following is a list of dot commands that you should use instead of word processing:
  • .ll line length
  • .in left margin (indent
  • .pa go to next page
  • .ce center next line
  • .fi fill in
  • .nf no fill
  • .sp leave a space (or .sp 2)
  • .ul underline (this doesn’t work too well)
  • .np no page numbers
  • .br break lines
  • .ds double space
  • .ss single space
In both cases of (script and Parkino), the work needs to be given to Mary Robinson on disk ready to transmit to the mainframe. Her computer takes 3.5-inch disks. The work needs to be saved in Word Perfect 5.1 or DOS. Name the file with file extension .scr (e.g., filename.scr).

"Ready to transmit" means that there are NO word processing commands in the work (e.g., underlining, centering, tab). Set margins at 0 and 70. Turn right justification off. Use the font "Courier" with a size of 12. Don’t use line wrap-around; each line must end with a hard return.

To check for hard returns when you are done with your document, check "Reveal Codes" in Word Perfect. In Microsoft Word, select "Options…" from the "Tools" menu bar. Under "View," select "Paragraph marks" under "Nonprinting characters." This will make all your hard returns appear as ¶. You must go through and replace all the soft returns (automatic wrapping at the end of the page) with hard returns (hitting the "Enter" key).

You must turn in your disks at least FOUR working days before you need the printout returned to you.

The following is an example of what your document should look like before you turn it in to Mary.

Lectures

1. People who work professionally with families often have been indoctrinated with a specific set of value orientations that embrace all but one of the following:

1. children should tactfully be encouraged to experiment with sex
2. families should do things together
3. married couples should have no more than two children
4. marriages should first receive parental approval
5. children should not masturbate

2. In attempting to explain the apparent universality ofthe nuclear family, Murdock (and others) argued that italways and everywhere fulfilled all but one of the functions listed below. Which one?

1. sexual relations
2. economic cooperation
3. reproduction
4. socialization
5. protection

3. A household (as distinguished from a family) is defined by the Census Bureau as:

1. two or more persons related by birth, marriage, or adoption who reside together
2. at least three adults who reside under the same roof
3. a person who lives alone, or several people who share
a dwelling
4. a maximum of two or more people who reside together
5. a physical structure physically separate from other buildings

Parkino

The other option for constructing tests is Parkino. It is multiple choice only. The Parkino test is programmed to scramble the work so that the questions are not in the same sequence on any two tests.

The main difference in preparing Parkino from script is in the question construction. Each question must have five answers. Sometimes it’s hard enough to make three or four answers and most test banks only come with four answers to each question, so take that into consideration if you plan to use Parkino.

The following is the protocol for preparing the questions and answers for Parkino:

  • Start each question with QQ at the left margin in place of numbers or letters.
  • Start each answer with AA at the left margin. Type AA S and the questions will be stacked.
  • DO NOT USE "a," "b," etc. Type "(1) answer (2) answer" until you have five answers.
  • The FIRST answer has to be the CORRECT ANSWER. Otherwise the program will not work.
  • There can be NO periods in the answers. If periods are in the answers the program does not work.
  • You can have a maximum of 74 questions.
It’s virtually impossible to cheat on these tests. The only problem is that invariably a few students will have a problem remembering to fill in their code that appears on the top of each exam when it’s printed. This makes it impossible to grade their exam since the answers are specific that a particular code.

The following is an example of what your exam should look like before you turn it in to Mary to use Parkino. Note the directions for filling in the scantron. You should either copy this or use something similar to help your students get this process right. It’s also helpful to make sure they write their name on the test. That way if they do fill in their code wrong, you can find out what it is.

Quiz One

Print your name and SS number in the spaces indicated. Bubble in your name, SS number, and section number in the appropriate spaces. Bubble this exam code number (see top of the page) in answer blanks 76 through 80. As an example if your code is 24135, you would bubble 2 for item 76, 4 for item 77, 1 for item 78, etc. Turn in your green sheet and this exam copy when finished. Place your name on both. This quiz contains 20 questions.

QQ Sociology as viewed from the normal science approach is characterized by a(n):
AA S (1) approach which assumes that social events are patterned and that it is possible to identify and understand these patterns (2) approach which attempts to use primarily the direct observation methodology (3) assumption which emphasizes the importance of researchers allowing their values to guide their research (4) belief that there are clear cut universal laws which enable sociologists to predict all of human behavior very precisely (5) non of the answers are correct

QQ C. Wright Mill’s concept, "Sociological Imagination," refers to a quality of mind which is capable of:
AA S (1) understanding the connection between one’s personal life and larger historical, social forces (2) understanding the universal laws of human behavior (3) recognizing that there are patterns to all social behavior (4) supporting an ideology that is consistent with social patterns (5) achieving complete objectivity

QQ One of the major disadvantages of ALL forms of indirect research is that the researcher:
AA S (1) none of the answers are correct (2) must always rely on people to report about their own personal experiences (3) may become too personally involved with the people being studied (4) has to rely solely on his/her subjective impressions rather than objective numerical data (5) will face very difficult ethical problems

Scantrons

For both script and Parkino tests, you need the green scantron sheets. Green scantron sheets are available in the Sociology Department office. For script, you must fill in your own answer sheets; one on a blue scantron form and one on the green. You can get the blue forms from Turlington B213 (OIR test grading center).

The green scantron sheets are to be taken to Turlington B213 for grading. If you have chosen the Parkino option, please tell Mary when you take the sheets to B213. Within an hour or so, she will receive a message on the computer, then ask it for grades. In about 20 minutes to an hour they will be printed. She will pick them up at NERDC and put them in your mailbox.
