How to Set Up and Manage a LISTSERV E-mail List at NERDC

The topics of e-mail lists at NERDC must be directly related to the instruction, research, or administrative mission of Florida’s State University System.

1. Submit the request for your new list using a forms-capable Web browser (such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) to open the following URL to fill out the request form on-line:

http://nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu/cgi-bin/list-request
2. For open subscription lists (lists which allow anyone to subscribe themselves), advertise to users that they can subscribe themselves by sending e-mail to listserv@lists.ufl.edu with the one-line message body:
Subscribe listname firstname lastname
3. Tell users that they can send e-mail to all subscribers on the list by sending e-mail to:
listname@lists.ufl.edu
where listname is the name of your particular list.

4. For students, you need to find a faculty member who will be willing to sponsor your list and serve as “co-list owner” with you.  You can tell them that it does not require any work on their part and they do not have to subscribe to the list and have their mailbox cluttered with your students’ e-mails.

Teaching Sociology LISTSERV

(To properly cite the source here, the following information comes directly from the welcome message sent to all new subscribers to this listserv).

This listserv is intended to provide a place to discuss and distribute news on teaching sociology.  It is open to all individuals interested in pedagogy, curriculum, and any other issues related to the teaching of sociology.

This bulletin board is not an official bulletin board of the American Sociological Association, the Teaching Resources Center of the ASA or the ASA journal Teaching Sociology.

To Subscribe

1. Address your message to:  LISTSERV@LISTSERV.LEMOYNE.EDU
2. On the subject line write:  New Subscription
3. On the first message line write: SUBSCRIBE TEACHSOC

  • Write this all as the first line in the message area.
  • Do not write this on the subject line.
To Send Messages

In order to send a message which will be distributed to ALL the subscribers of the list, use the following address:

TEACHSOC@LISTSERV.LEMOYNE.EDU
After your message arrives at this address it is duplicated and sent out to everyone who is currently on the list.  Please remember that if you reply to a message sent to you by the list, your reply goes to EVERYONE on the list.  If you want to respond to someone's message privately, send it directly to their PERSONAL e-mail address.

If you have problems with your subscription, contact the List Manager at:

WHEELER@MAPLE.LEMOYNE.EDU
Common techno-problems:
  • sending to the address LISTSERVE instead of LISTSERV
  • sending subscription messages to the list address, not the LISTSERV or request address
  • sending file request messages to LISTSERV
  • putting management requests on subject line but not in message
  • including a signature file in a management request message
The snail mail address is:

Office of Information Systems
Le Moyne College, Syracuse NY  13214
