Services: The only place in town that proudly displays the rainbow flag in front, the CMC is a center for “non-corporate points of view.” This encompasses many things. For our purposes, it is first and foremost a library of books, magazines, and videos covering a wide range of socially relevant issues and topics often not available at more mainstream locations.

It has been open for several years on a non-profit basis, thanks to annual memberships of community members and regular donations. Anyone who has a membership can check out materials—you specify the due date. Memberships are very reasonable. The CMC is staffed totally on a volunteer basis.

After hours, the CMC also serves as a meeting place for a variety of local progressive organizations, from labor and farming to women’s rights. It is the central hub of activism of Gainesville; if you want to know what’s going on in the community, this should be your first stop. The CMC and its affiliates also put out the Gainesville Iguana, a free and independent progressive newsmagazine.
